Kazakhstan just entered the air taxi race. On August 6, 2026, a passenger flew on an autonomous electric air taxi for the first time in the country’s history. The flight happened in Astana, the capital city, during the Games of the Future 2026 event.
The aircraft used was an EHang EH216-S. This is a two-seat autonomous flying machine made by the Chinese company EHang. There was no pilot inside. The aircraft flew on its own over a specially marked area in the city.
The Committee of Civil Aviation confirmed that one passenger sat inside the EH216-S and completed a demonstration flight. The aircraft took off vertically, flew over the designated zone, and landed safely.
This was not a long city-to-city trip. It was a controlled demonstration to prove the technology works in Kazakhstan’s conditions. But it is a big deal because it is the very first time a person has flown inside an eVTOL aircraft in this country.
EHang EH216-S Details
The EH216-S is a small electric aircraft designed for short trips. Here are the basic numbers:

- Top speed: 130 kilometers per hour (about 80 mph)
- Range: up to 35 kilometers (about 22 miles)
- Pilot: None — it flies completely on its own
- Power: Fully electric, runs on batteries
EHang is the same company that already runs commercial air taxi flights in China. They have also done passenger flights in other countries like Mexico, Thailand, and Switzerland. Now Kazakhstan is on that list too.
Kazakhstan’s Air Taxi Plans
This flight did not come out of nowhere. Kazakhstan’s government has been planning for air taxis since early 2026. In May, the government shared its full plan for urban air mobility. Here is what they want to do:
- Create rules and regulations for eVTOL aircraft
- Build vertiports (small airports for air taxis)
- Set up unmanned air traffic management systems
- Launch pilot air taxi routes between Alatau, Almaty, and Konayev by 2027
The company is looking for 2027 target. It means Kazakhstan wants to have regular air taxi routes running within the next year. Those first routes will likely be short sightseeing flights lasting 5 to 30 minutes over natural and cultural landmarks.
Kazakhstan is not thinking about air taxis only for regular passengers. The government also sees these aircraft being useful for:
- Emergency medical response (rushing doctors or medicine to patients)
- Firefighting support
- Logistics and cargo delivery
- Reaching remote communities faster
In a country as large as Kazakhstan, where distances between cities are huge, autonomous aircraft could actually solve real transportation problems. Getting medicine to a remote village in 20 minutes instead of 3 hours by road could save lives.
Here is the most interesting part. Kazakhstan does not just want to fly air taxis. They want to manufacture them locally. The government announced plans to set up local production of eVTOL aircraft through an international partnership.
If this happens, Kazakhstan would not just be an early adopter of air taxi technology. It would become a regional manufacturing hub for Central Asia. That could bring jobs, technology transfer, and export opportunities.

Rules Are Already Being Written
The government is not waiting around. The Ministry of Transport has already made changes to the law to cover eVTOL operations. New legislation now includes rules for:
- How eVTOL aircraft can operate
- How vertiports should be built and managed
- How unmanned air traffic will be controlled
This puts Kazakhstan ahead of many other countries that are still figuring out their rules. Having a legal framework ready means companies can start operations faster once the infrastructure is built.
How Kazakhstan Compares to Other Countries
Kazakhstan is not the first country to fly passengers in an eVTOL. Dubai and China are further ahead. But for Central Asia, this is a first. And Kazakhstan is moving faster than many European countries that are still stuck in planning stages.
The fact that they used EHang’s aircraft is also significant. EHang is the only company in the world with a fully certified autonomous air taxi. Other companies like Joby and Archer still require a human pilot. EHang does not. That makes it easier to deploy in countries that do not have a big pool of trained eVTOL pilots.

The next steps for Kazakhstan are clear:
- More test flights through 2026
- Build the first vertiport infrastructure in Astana and Almaty
