Electric air taxis are officially coming to Texas. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has teamed up with top flight companies like Joby Aviation and BETA Technologies to test electric air taxis across the state. This project, named Project Nexus, aims to turn futuristic flying cars into a real transportation option for people moving between major cities.

The state is rolling out this project in three simple phases over the next three years. In the first phase, pilots will fly standard planes and helicopters to test safe flight routes in the air. In the second phase, the team will focus on medical and cargo supply deliveries, using the aircraft to quickly move emergency organs and medicine between hospitals in cities like Austin and San Antonio.

In the final phase, actual passenger flights will launch across the Texas Triangle—connecting Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston. Instead of spending hours stuck in traffic on crowded highways, travelers will soon be able to fly straight over the roads, saving time and cutting down air pollution.
