Archer Aviation has recently announced something big. On July 30, 2026, the company flew its all-electric Midnight air taxi on a roundtrip journey between Salinas Municipal Airport and Monterey Regional Airport in California. Each leg took about 9 minutes. The same trip by car? Over 35 minutes.

This was not a test on some private track. Archer worked directly with the FAA to make this flight happen. The pilot took off from Salinas, landed at Monterey, and then flew back. Both directions. No issues.

This is a preview of what Archer plans to do later this year under the White House eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, known as eIPP. The program was set up to speed up commercial air taxi services across the United States. Archer is one of the companies selected to operate under this program.

The Salinas-to-Monterey route is exactly the kind of short, time-saving trip Midnight was built for. Instead of sitting in traffic for half an hour or more, you fly over it in less than 10 minutes.

Archer Has Big Plans for LA28

Beyond California test flights, Archer is getting ready for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The company has an exclusive deal to be the Official Air Taxi Provider for LA28. That means during the Olympics, people will be able to book Midnight flights across the city.

Adam Goldstein, Archer’s founder and CEO, said this Salinas-Monterey route is a template. The company plans to copy this kind of operation across Texas, Florida, and New York as part of the eIPP program later this year.

What Is Midnight?

Midnight is Archer’s flagship electric air taxi. It takes off and lands vertically, like a helicopter. But it runs on batteries, not fuel. It is quiet. It produces zero emissions while flying.

The aircraft is designed to replace those painful 60-to-90 minute car trips with short electric flights. Think airport runs, city-to-city hops, and commute routes that usually eat up your morning.

Working With the Government

Archer is not doing this alone. The company is working with federal, state, and local governments to build out the procedures, infrastructure, and teams needed for commercial air taxi operations. This includes setting up vertiports, training staff, and figuring out air traffic rules for these new aircraft.

The eIPP program gives companies like Archer a path to launch real commercial services. It is not just about proving the tech works. It is about building the entire system around it.

What Comes Next

Archer plans to start eIPP operations later in 2026. The company is also preparing across its partner states. Beyond that, the LA28 Olympics will be the biggest public showcase for air taxi technology the world has ever seen.

For now, this California roundtrip proves one thing: Midnight works in real-world conditions, on real routes, with real FAA coordination. That is a major step forward.

The air taxi industry is moving fast. Archer is making sure it is at the front.
